Masonic Avenue

A 1970's A-Frame Revived....

Of all the projects I've completed over the years, I think this is perhaps my favorite due to the  design and structural challenges imposed by the original structure and the incredible transformation that took place.

The house, located in Oakland's Upper Rockridge neighborhood, was originally constructed in the early 1970's and added on to piecemeal over the years.  While it was a single residence, there were a total of three small kitchens, one on each level of the house.  At the rear of the residence, it became a warren of rooms with interconnected bedrooms, living areas, hallways... It wasn't until the floor plan was drawn out that the house's arrangement and structure really became apparent.  It also became clear that with all of the previous modifications, some of that structure had been compromised and that a lot of work was going to be necessary.

The clients wanted a three-bedroom home with two and a half baths, plus an in-law suite.  To simplify the permitting process, we added on less than 600 square feet below an existing deck and focused on improving the existing floor plan.  Stylistically, the goal was to streamline the house by removing the 1970's Nordic details and create symmetry and balance by modifying a series of shed-roofed dormers and flattening out the roofs.  Inside, we opened up the floor plan to create a sense of drama and an easy flow.

While the house is now modern in style with crisp white walls inside and out, details like hand-made steel and cedar railings, wide plank white oak floors, reclaimed wood paneling and a handsome concrete and cedar vanity in the powder room add warmth to the spaces.

The result is a residence that is completely unique.  We preserved the best part of the original home, connecting it to a series of modern spaces which enhance its individuality and make it a comfortable place to call home.

At R-A-Design we love to work on projects like this, Homes where architecture and and craft come together to create a truly special place.
